The medicinal part of Poria cocos is Poria cocos sclerotia, and Poria cocos polysaccharides are the main effective ingredients of Poria cocos. Modern clinical and pharmacological studies have shown that Poria cocos polysaccharides have good anti-tumor effects. This sugar has the ability to enhance the cytotoxicity of macrophages and T lymphocytes, as well as enhance the immune response of cells and activate the body's immune surveillance system against tumors. Its mechanism is related to the activation of complement.

The pharmacological effects of Poria Cocos (Fu Ling) Polysaccharides
Poria cocos polysaccharides are mainly distributed in the fruiting bodies, mycelium, and fermentation broth of Poria cocos. The polysaccharides extracted from fruiting bodies and mycelium are called intracellular polysaccharides, while the polysaccharides secreted from Poria cocos during liquid deep fermentation into the extracellular space are called extracellular polysaccharides. The polysaccharide content varies in different parts of the mycelium. Poria cocos polysaccharides have anti-tumor and immune enhancing activities. Polysaccharides in Poria cocos include Pachymaran, Pachymaran, β- (1-3) – D-glucan and a small amount β- (1 → 6) Glycoside side chains.

1. Diuretic effect: It has a strong diuretic effect on patients with cardiac edema, used for edema and oliguria.

2. Antibacterial effect: It has inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Proteus, and other bacteria.

3. Effects on the digestive system: It has a direct relaxing effect on the isolated intestinal tract of rabbits, a preventive effect on ulcers formed by pyloric ligation in rats, and can lower gastric acid. It also has a significant protective effect on CCl4 induced liver injury in rats, significantly reducing the activity of alanine aminotransferase and preventing liver cell necrosis.

4. Anti tumor effect: The main component in Poria cocos is Pachyman, which has a high content. Poria cocos polysaccharide itself has no anti-tumor activity. If the content of Poria cocos polysaccharide is cut off β- (1 → 6) Pyranose branched chains, becoming pure β- (1 → 3) Glucomannan, also known as Pachymaran, has an inhibitory rate of 96.88% on mouse sarcoma S180.

5. The effect of Poria cocos polysaccharides on immune function:
5.1. Increase the cytotoxicity of macrophages, resulting in a significant increase in the phagocytic rate and index of phagocytic cells.
5.2. It can significantly enhance the number of spleen antibody secreting cells (PFC) and specific antigen binding cells (SRFC). It can significantly enhance the growth of splenic T cell growth factor (TCGF).
5.3. Increase the number of acid non-specific esterase (ANAE) positive lymphocytes and have the functions of anti thymic atrophy, anti splenic enlargement, and inhibition of tumor growth.
5.4. Enhancing the cytotoxicity of T lymphocytes, i.e. enhancing cellular immune response, and thus activating the body’s immune supervision system against tumors, is closely related to its anti-tumor activity.

6. Effects on the blood system:
6.1. It can accelerate the recovery of white blood cells in rats caused by cyclophosphamide.
6.2. Poria cocos water extract containing water-soluble small molecule polysaccharides can increase the levels of 2,3-dPG in isolated healthy human red blood cells by about 25%, and can effectively delay the depletion of 2,3-dPG during the incubation process. Both subcutaneous injection and oral administration can significantly increase plasma corticosterone levels.

7. Impact on the central nervous system:
It has a sedative effect, and as the dosage increases, the sedative index also increases.

8. Other functions:
8.1. It has the effect of first increasing and then decreasing blood sugar.
8.2. It has the effect of enhancing cardiac contraction and accelerating heart rate.
8.3. Significantly inhibit MAO-B activity.
8.4. Carboxymethyl Poria cocos polysaccharide (100mg/kg/day) intraperitoneal injection for 12 days can counteract the inhibitory effect of 60Cor radiation on mouse terminal white blood cells, reduce the content of cytochrome P-450 in liver homogenate, and enhance the central inhibitory effect of thiopental sodium.
